What Motivates People?

Have you ever had a boss that is passive-aggressive? Or one that spoke down to you or your colleagues? Maybe they know EVERYTHING about the business or industry you’re in and want to make sure that you do things THEIR way. We’ve all had experiences with other people that have made us feel a little icky or enraged, and on the contrary, we’ve worked with people who make us feel inspired and want to push ourselves to our highest potential. What are the differences between the two different scenarios?

Different people will take the same situation or feedback and will use it to fuel their fire or to put it out. Knowing how your people tick and perform at their full potential is essential to being a successful leader in your business or industry. Your people are your business; without them, you’re left with a few office supplies and an idea. It’s important to motivate them and care for them in a way that works for them, not you. Yes, it’s also very important to realize what motivates you, but just because that works for you, doesn’t mean it works for everyone.

As a leader, you want to help people get from A to B, whether that be a task, sale or destination. Supporting their way of getting there is important. As long as your teams are getting the tasks complete in a timely manner, then what does it matter if they ran, rollerbladed or biked to get there? Coaching is how you guide them to seeing that biking might be a bit more efficient, but telling them the only option is to sprint might leave them feeling exhausted.

For me, yelling, speaking to me in a condescending tone and being passive-aggressive doesn’t make me feel good, I retract put up walls and think of ways to getaway. Being spoken to as an equal, directly, in a way that allows me to see options and think things through is how I feel the most supported. This is different for different people. I’ve seen athletes get jacked up from a coach yelling and criticizing them openly, I’ve also seen athletes get really down on themselves in the same situation. How are you noticing your actions are affecting how your clients and team members react?

If you’re not sure what motivates your people, try asking them. Just like you’d ask clients how they like to be contacted (phone, text, email, etc.), it’s important to talk to your team.
